What Are Root Canals?

Root canals are a routine dental procedure that is used to treat a tooth that has become infected or damaged due to decay. The procedure involves removing the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, which contains the nerve and blood vessels. It is then replaced with a filling material to seal the tooth and prevent further infection. Root canals are an important part of preserving a healthy smile and avoiding tooth pain. Root canals can be done in one or multiple visits to the dentist. During the procedure, the dentist will first numb the area around the tooth to ensure the patients comfort. The dentist will then use small tools to remove the damaged pulp, clean the inside of the tooth, and shape it for the filling material. The filling material is usually guttapercha, a rubberlike material, which is placed in the tooth and sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.

Additional Information On Root Canals

After the procedure is complete, the patient may experience some soreness or discomfort, but this should subside in a few days. To prevent further infection, the patient should practice good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing regularly, and avoiding sticky and hard foods. It is also important to visit the dentist for regular cleanings and checkups. Root canals have a high success rate and can save a damaged or infected tooth from being extracted. It is important to take care of your teeth and visit the dentist regularly to avoid needing a root canal. If you do need one, it is a routine procedure that can help restore your smile and reduce tooth pain.
